Abstract :
Polyamide 6 (PA6) is an engineering thermoplastic with superior mechanical properties such as high modulus of elasticity. PA6 has disadvantages such as high moisture absorption, low impact resistance, poor dimensional stability, notch sensitivity and low notched impact resistance. In order to expand the application area of PA6 and eliminate these disadvantageous properties, it has recently been toughened with thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). TPE is highly preferred in the field of polymer technology due to its rubbery properties, easy processing and recyclability. In this study, PA6 and TPE were melted using an Xplore model twin screw micro-compounder and then molded to obtain standard test samples by using an Xplore model micro injection machine. Samples were cooled at different cooling rates by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics were examined. Using the data obtained from DSC analyses, the crystallization rate and nucleation dimensions of the samples were evaluated by Avrami and combined Avrami-Ozawa kinetic models. Nucleation activities were examined by the Dobreva-Gutzow model. The activation energies were calculated using the Kissinger, Takhor and Friedman methods. In addition, spherulite growth was assessed by polarized optical microscope (POM) analyses.
