Abstract :
Silicone materials have been produced commercially since the beginning of 1940s and its usage has gradually increased, also. Nowadays, silicone products are preferred for many application areas such as construction buildings, white good appliances, automotive industry, aerospace industry and medical industry etc. In these industries, silicone elastomer is widely used as cable insulation, heat impermeability seals, suspension seals, hoses and tubes. Because of its advantages such as heat resistance, good mechanical properties and flexibility, silicone materials started to be used instead of many other materials. There are some different types of silicones like vinyl methyl silicone, phenyl vinyl methyl silicone, fluorosilicone. Fluorosilicone is especially suitable for extreme hazardous conditions and it has very good resistance a variety of chemicals and oils. In this study, by using two different compounds, one being vinyl methyl silicone (VMQ) and the other fluorosilicone (FVMQ) compound, we compare thermal aging and oil exposure resistance properties. Hydraulic oil, ASTM oil, diesel oil, grease oil, turbo oil 2197 and 2380 were also used for testing oil exposure resistance properties. In conclusion, the oil resistance and thermal aging properties of VMQ and FVMQ were examined and the differences between them were experimentally demonstrated.
