Abstract :
Healthcare technology advancements, heavily reliant on sensor technology, facilitate early diagnosis and precise treatment. For assessing orthopedic and diabetic foot complications, monitoring foot pressure and gait analysis are crucial. This study investigates the effectiveness of Velostat-based pressure-sensitive resistance sensors for insole pressure mapping, particularly in orthopedic assessment and diabetes management. Comparing single, double, and triple-layer Velostat sensors with commercial FSR sensors, the research focuses on their resistance changes under weight loading up to 15 kg. Results suggest that while Velostat sensors offer advantages in cost, shaping, and flexibility, they exhibit slower response times and lower sensitivity compared to FSR sensors. Multi-layer configurations enhance sensitivity but pose challenges in production and alignment. Additionally, it needs some structural designs to obtain the maximum sensitivity and high resolution. This research highlights the potential of multi-layered Velostat sensors in load detection on foot soles, emphasizing their suitability for applications involving static loads and slow dynamic loads like walking.
