Abstract :
Polylactic acid (PLA) has gained significant attention as an environmentally friendly substitute for conventional plastics. In this study, we explored the feasibility of reusing PLA fibres through a cyclic re-spinning process. This process involves re-spinning of 60 wt. % of dissolved virgin PLA blended with 40 wt.% of spun fibre (PLA-R) from the preceding cycle. The effects of consecutive recycling on fibre properties are examined through tensile tests and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Most of the recycled/reused PLAs exhibit higher tensile modulus, strength, and elongations indicating improved properties from re-spinning of the fibre membrane scraps with fresh PLA. The study demonstrates a remarkable increase in tensile strength, showing a 240% strength improvement compared to the initial spun PLA. However, challenges remain in stabilising properties, warranting further optimisation of process conditions and the addition of additives. The results highlight the potential for sustainable fibre membranes, supporting the circular economy approach.
