Compressive Strength of PU Foam/Spacer Fabric Composite Structures

Abstract :
Spacer fabrics (SF’s) have been used to reinforce flexible Polyurethane (PU) foams. The SF’s had different yarn linear densities and different compressive strengths. The Compressive strengths of composites were compared to both spacer fabrics and foam itself. The samples were prepared in a (10x10x1.5 cm) mold at 40ºC for 1 hour, and then left to be cured in room temperature for at least 24 hours. The results show that adding spacer fabrics to the PU foams increases the compressive strength of the composites. The compressive strengths of the 4 composites were compared to each other, and the results showed that increasing the yarn linear density increases the compressive strength, except for composite 3 which showed strain values higher than composite 2 which was inconsistent with the literature. SEM of the Foam samples showed an open-cell structure with diameters ranging from 0.1mm to 0.4mm.
