Abstract :
In this study, polymer sponges have been prepared using matrix phase which contains polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and pectin, and oil phase β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and citronella essential oil (CEO). The addition of β-CD/CEO complexes in specific proportions (1:1, 1:2, and 1:4) to water phase, which is a polymer matrix composed of a mixture of PVA and pectin by mechanical frothing at high speed, and air bubbles have been formed in oil in water (o/w) emulsions and then crosslinked. Optical and stereo-microscopes showed these bio-based sponges open porous structures and the incorporation of CEO increased the pores in sponges. It has been proved with FT-IR that there is no chemical reaction between the polymer matrixes and the oil and that there is only physical interaction. Further, the surfaces of samples have a hydrophilic property with contact angles values below 75°. According to swelling test, the sponge with a β-CD/CEO ratio of 1:2 has the highest swelling value for both 6h and 12h. Consequently, our findings indicated that the sponges can be a potential wound dressing for biomedical applications.
