Abstract :
Nowadays, disposable hygienic products are more widely preferred, especially due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic period. Wet wipes have been commonly used in personal hygiene for many years thanks to their ease of use. Contents of these disposable hygiene products, which help to provide deep cleaning and disinfection, are developed according to different usage areas. Wet wipes mainly contain a nonwoven fabric wetted with a surfactant-based solution. Additionally, they may also contain moisturizers, herbal oils, extracts and antibacterial ingredients. Due to practical cleaning offered by wet wipes makes use of these products indispensable when access to traditional cleaning materials is limited. This study aims to understand the effect of soap-based wet wipes on skin barrier in comparison with other alternative products commonly used in the market. In this study, 5 different products were tested by taking TEWL measurements from the outer surfaces of the volunteers’ hands. TEWL measurements were performed before and after the use of the products to understand TEWL change. It was determined that soap-based wet wipes, solid soap and cologne products reduce the TEWL value of skin while liquid soaps cause an increase.
