Abstract :
In this study, bast fibers have been obtained from hemp plant stems by biological degumming method. The obtained fibers and remaining stems were subjected to nanocellulose extraction processes according to acidic hydrolysis method. In this method the hemp fibers are cleaned from extracellulosic components by use of environmentally friendly chlorine-free processes. The isolated cellulose is broken into nanocrystals by using strong acidic treatment. The effects of applied treatments on fibers’ chemical and morphological properties have been investigated. Treatments resulted in decrease of fiber diameter into single-celled elementary fiber dimensions. FT-IR spectra in addition to scanning electron micrographs hints removal of lignin, hemicelluloses and waxes during cellulose isolation processes.
