Abstract :
Poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) is used in electrical insulation applications and electrical cables due to the flame retardant properties of the chlorine atoms it contains, in the construction industry due to its durability and adaptability to various weather conditions, and in the automotive industry due to its cheap cost and various forms. Tons of PVC waste pipes and joinery are found in the rubble of buildings destroyed in the earthquake. The environmental risks posed by phthalate derivatives found in PVC-based wastes are of great importance for public and environmental health. In this study, the toxic properties of the plasticizers added to PVC during the production stage and the public health and environmental risks that they may cause when they come into contact with the soil and from there into the groundwater were evaluated. In this study, the migration of phthalate derivatives in plasticized PVC (p-PVC) films into soil was examined. First of all, p-PVC plastisols were obtained. Di-octyl teres phthalate (DOTP), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), DIDP and DINP were added to PVC resin as plasticizers. 150μm thick films were drawn from the obtained plastisols and plastigel films were obtained by gelling these films in an oven at 160°C for 15 minutes. Plasticizer migration from the films to the soil was calculated from the weight loss.
