Abstract :
In this study, we report a non-isocyanate polyhydroxy urethane (PHU) synthesized from diglycerol dicarbonate (DGDC) at mild conditions with low temperatures and free of catalysts. Diglycerol dicarbonate was synthesized from diglycerol and dimethyl carbonate and then reacted with 2,2,4-Trimethylhexamethylenediamine to form PHU. 2,2,4-Trimethylhexamethylenediamine is a commercially available diamine structure that has not been synthesized in PHU with itself before. The chemical bond structures of DGDC and PHU were confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The melting temperature was determined by DSC to determine the crystal structure of DGDC. The melting temperature was 72.6 °C, indicating that the monomer structure is largely needle-like crystalline. The synthesized polymer is predicted to perform good in coating applications, given the abundance of reactive hydroxyl functionalities found along the PHU backbone, which can be used for curing purposes and/or upon further functionalization. Also, it can be used at biomedical application due to nontoxic isocyanate-free structure. The polymer produced by green synthesis in this work opens up new areas of research.
