Abstract :
In this research study, three different impact modifiers were used to improve the interactions between phases in short glass fiber reinforced poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBT) composites, and the efficiency of the modifiers was comparatively analyzed. With this aim, three different compatibilizers, namely, ethylene–co–butyl acrylate (BA), ethylene–co–methyl acrylate–co–glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), and ethylene–co–butyl acrylate–co–maleic anhydride (MAH) are included into the PBT/SGF composite structure with the constant amount of 10 wt%. The extrusion process was conducted to melt the mixing of the ingredients. The specimens were molded for the mechanical tests in a lab-scale injection molding machine. Mechanical properties of the PBT matrix and the relevant composites were analyzed using tensile, flexural, and impact tests. The visco-elastic behavior of the samples was characterized by the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), as the micro-structural characterization was performed via SEM inspection. The optimum performance is achieved using the GMA impact modifier when the test results are considered. The compatibilizers used in the study show improvement mechanisms, particularly in impact properties. Considering the overall performance of the impact modifiers, the ranking was as follows: GMA > MAH > BA.
