Investigation of Intra-Ply Discontinuities on Mechanical Properties of Continuous E-Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite Beams

Abstract :
This study explores the impact of intra-ply discontinuities on glass fiber-reinforced composite plates. These discontinuities were introduced in two full-scale models using layers of glass fiber-reinforced prepregs. Discontinuities were generated via CNC cutting and manually applied. The mechanical properties were evaluated using 3-point bending quasi-static tests. Results from the experiments were compared with CAE analysis predictions. Microscopic analysis of the fiber volume fraction and resin-rich zones provided additional insights into the mechanical performance and failure patterns. This approach aids in optimizing composite manufacturing processes, improving reliability in composite components.
