Abstract :
In this study, fibers have been produced from okra stem and fruits via water retting. Cellulose have been extracted from the produced okra bast fibers, fruit fibers and the remaining okra plant stem. Morphological and chemical properties of okra bast fibers and cellulose obtained from okra bast fibers, fruit fibers and okra stem have been investigated. Cellulose fibers extracted from okra bast fibers, okra fruit fibers and okra stems exhibit fiber diameters as 45.02, 54.88 and 24.43 µm, respectively, indicating at least around 100 times reduction in number of elementary fibers compared to starting materials. 42.04, 40.00 and 40.16% cellulose fibers were extracted from okra bast fibers, okra fruit fibers and okra stems based on mass. Cellulose obtained from okra bast fibers, okra fruit fibers and okra stems exhibit FT-IR spectra similar to that of conventional cellulose fibers.
