Assessment of Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Filler Particles from Different Lignocellulosic Agricultural Biowastes

Abstract :
Sustainable material production and environmental protection have become an important priority on a global scale. In this context, recycling agricultural wastes and using them in polymer composite manufacturing has great potential both environmentally and economically. Millions of tons of unused agricultural waste are generated each year, and these biowastes have no economic value or industrial use and are generally discarded, burned, or otherwise disposed of. In addition, serious environmental problems arise with the burning of these agricultural wastes. The main component of these biowastes is lignocellulosic materials, which have many reactive functional groups and many chemical advantages such as high carbon content, compatibility with various industrial chemicals and good stability. They are potential candidates as reinforcement materials in polymer composites due to the positive effects on mechanical properties due to the presence of aromatic rings in their structures. However, the final composite product properties are directly related to the type and chemical composition of the filler particles used. For this purpose, different agricultural wastes such as hazelnut shells, walnut shells, almond shells, peanut shells, pistachio shells, hemp seeds, sunflower pulp and olive pomace were used in this study. After the pre-drying process, the biowastes were grounded and separated into fractions using a series of vibrating sieves. The moisture content, ash content, chemical structure and composition (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and extractive content) and physical analysis, thermal properties were determined.
