Abstract :
Composites are widely used in many areas of industry. The use of composite materials iis of great importance among the types of materials that shield against electromagnetic waves. These materials have the ability to absorb electromagnetic waves at various wavelengths. In particular, composite materials that act as electromagnetic shielding are widely used in thermal imaging systems by effectively absorbing electromagnetic waves in the infrared spectrum. This is a highly desirable feature, especially in next generation military aviation technologies. In this context, our study aims to transform glass fiber, which is widely used in the aerospace industry, into an infrared wave absorption material using carbon-based, green and sustainable resources. Our work differs from other examples with its carbon-based, innovative, sustainable and industrial applicability. In our study, quantum dots capable of absorbing a broad spectrum in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum were synthesized using microwave assisted method. The absorption abilities of these quantum dots were measured by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy and quantum dots with active properties were identified. The obtained quantum dots were integrated into the surface activated glass fiber material by heat treatment and the success of the integration process was proved by FTIR analysis. As a result, quantum dots, which can successfully absorb 600-800 nm wavelength rays, were integrated into the waste glass fiber material by modification method and enabled the glass fiber to gain infrared absorbing properties.
