Green denim bleaching: ozone gas and fabric waste for sustainable development

Abstract :
Denim apparel is usually favored as daily wear due to its aesthetic appeal, sturdy construction, and comfortability. Various washing procedures are used to get the required aging effect on these textiles, including laser, spray, stone washing, and bleaching. In this work, a more sustainable bleaching method was devised using waste materials and ozone gas as an alternative to the conventional bleaching method that uses sodium hypochlorite on garments. The fabrics that are utilized in the process of creating prototypes for tensile testing, fit testing, or effect fixing are referred to as waste fabrics. The relevant fabrics were repurposed by cutting them into 48 cm2 and 336 cm2 elliptical and rectangular bags, respectively. The bleaching impact of waste fabric was compared with conventional towel bleaching applications. The fabric wastes were wetted and placed in the ozone device using three separate spin cycles. Examined was the relationship between ozone gas and fabrics with varying moisture contents during the bleaching of denim garments. The developed products were compared based on the results of elasticity (TS EN 14704-1), tear strength (ISO 13937-2), and dry and wet fastness analyses. A study on the light stand effect evaluation was conducted under the ISO 3664:2009 standard. Examining the outcomes reveals that the tear strength rises under the spin cycle velocity. It was found that the elasticity, recovery, and fastness characteristics were not significantly impacted by the spin cycle.
