Abstract :
In recent years, with the development of industries, air pollution has usually caused a severe impact on public safety and human health. Among the air pollutants, particulate matter (PM) are one of the most prevailing pollutants as they are small enough to penetrate the human respiratory system, leading to heart failure, respiratory diseases, and cancer. Electrospinning is a fascinating technique for fabricating ultrafine nanofibrous filters with high particle removal efficiency. Here, recent advances and essential outcomes in functional nanofibrous filter media for particulate matter removal will be summarized. A novel approach for rational design and fabrication of a highly efficient and functional filter media based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene nanosheets for air pollution remediation will be discussed. MOFs are a relatively new class of three-dimensional nanoporous crystalline structures with large specific surface area, tunable pore size, and functional surface chemistry. MXene nanosheets exhibit exceptional conductivity, high surface area, tunable chemistry, antibacterial, and reducing properties, as well as a profusion of oxygen and hydroxyl groups that make them hydrophilic and stable in aqueous environments. The pivotal role of MOFs in the enhancement of filtration efficiency of nanofibrous filters as well as the specific properties of MXenes favor the possibility of fabrication of novel functional nanofibrous filter media. Finally, challenges for the utilization of functional nanofibrous filter media, current limitations, and future outlook for their applications in environmental application will be presented.
