Abstract :
Glass fiber reinforced polymer composites possess favorable properties such as low density, high strength, and ease of processing, making them widely used in the aerospace, automotive, and construction industries. Epoxy is one of the preferred matrix materials for polymer composites. However, the flammability of epoxy leads to a reduced resistance of glass fiber reinforced composites to combustion. Therefore, various flame retardant fillers are incorporated into epoxy to enhance the fire retardancy of composites. In this study, different weight percentages of zinc borate (ZnB) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) fillers were added both individually and in hybrid form to glass fiber-epoxy laminated composites, and their flame retardant properties were investigated. The test results showed that as the amount of additives increased, the burning rate of the composites decreased. Additionally, when composites containing the same percentages of ZnB and Mg(OH)2 flame retardant fillers were compared, it was observed that ZnB-reinforced composites exhibited better flame retardant properties than those reinforced with Mg(OH)2.
