Examining the Mechanical Properties of Basalt, Glass Fiber and Hybrid Composites

Abstract :
Basalt fiber, derived from natural minerals, is an environmentally friendly material commonly used in sectors such as automotive, construction, and energy. In this study, three composite groups were tested: glass fiber reinforced composites (GFRP), basalt fiber reinforced composites (BFRP), and glass-basalt hybrid composites (GBFRP). These specimens underwent tensile, 3-point bending, and Charpy impact tests. BFRP exhibited the highest tensile strength, showcasing superior load-bearing capability. GFRP, while offering good performance, showed the lowest tensile strength, as glass fibers are weaker compared to basalt fibers. The hybrid composite (GBFRP) showed intermediate tensile strength, benefiting from both materials but not exceeding pure basalt. For the 3-point bending test, BFRP once again outperformed the others, displaying excellent resistance to bending because of basalt fiber's stiffness and strength. GBFRP fell in between, with improved strength over GFRP but not as high as BFRP. Similarly, in the Charpy impact test, BFRP had the highest impact resistance, while GFRP had the lowest. GBFRP showed moderate impact resistance, indicating the hybridization improved upon GFRP but could not surpass BFRP. In summary, BFRP performed the best across all tests, with GBFRP offering a balanced improvement over GFRP, but not matching pure basalt's performance.
