Electrospinning of Biocompatible Bilayer Membranes

Abstract :
WHO reports that 180,000+ deaths happen due to burns every year [1] where countries such as Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt and Pakistan have severe cases especially in children reaching up to 20% [2]. Few patients have access to reconstructive procedures which leads to untreated and handicapped patients. Skin and wound healing substitutes that are available in the market have their limitations which need to be overcome including costs and effectiveness as substitutes which are hindered due to non-similarity with skin, contamination issues, lack of mechanical strength etc. The techniques used to make these substitutes are made at high costs and difficult to control in terms of their features. For this the most suitable technique with precise feature control of the substitute is needed along with high production rate and reproducibility. Project goals: Use a biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric combination optimally suited for wound healing applications. For this purpose, PHBV and PLLA were chosen as suitable candidates. Use the high production rate method of Electrospinning to produce a well-defined fiber mat structure to allow cellular penetration and mechanical strength. The form of these membranes were bilayer where one layer was pure PHBV, and the other layer was formed in combination in PLLA. Test the efficacy of the produced material in-vitro and mechanically to define future goals for the current material combination.
