Heat Diffusivity of Butyl Rubber Composite in the Presence of Boron Carbide Filler for Bladder Tire Curing Application

Abstract :
This study aimed to investigate the effects of boron carbide (B4C) incorporation as a heat conductive filler on the heat transfer coefficient and mechanical properties of the bladder composite for tire curing applications. B4C microparticles were added to a carbon black filled butyl rubber-based composites through melt compounding method. The effect of B4C micro particle loading on tensile properties and heat diffusivity coefficient (α) of rubber composites has been reported here. A heat transfer mathematical modeling and computer simulation was also conducted using ABAQUS finite element software to simulate the effect of bladder composite heat diffusivity increment on temperature-time dependency of different tire points during curing process. An increase of α was observed with the incorporation of 10 and 20 Phr B4C. However, it was shown that this increase in α may change the temperature profile of tire according to the finite element heat transfer simulation results of tire curing process using the heat conductive bladder. In addition, a decrease of mechanical properties of butyl composite was observed by incorporating of B4C. The results of this research showed that the direct application of boron carbide in the bladder composites by the melt mixing method is not a very satisfactory option for the developing of the heat-conducting bladder formula.
