Abstract :
Graft Polymerization Graft polymerization is a sophisticated chemical synthesis technique that allows for the alteration of a base polymer's inherent properties by polymerizing monomers onto its backbone. This process is instrumental in enhancing the polymer’s mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and surface properties. The procedure primarily involves three critical components: the substrate (backbone), the grafting monomer, and an initiator, typically a free radical initiator. The initiator generates reactive species on the substrate, which facilitate the attachment and subsequent polymerization of the grafting monomers. This polymerization extends until all reactive sites are occupied or the reaction is intentionally terminated. The application of graft polymerization spans various industries, including coatings, adhesives and notably in textile. Summary of the Project The current study specifically explores the graft polymerization of acrylic acid onto a sugar-based polymer, utilizing potassium persulfate as the initiator. The synthesized graft polymer is particularly designed for the textile industry, serving primarily as an eco-friendly and sustainable polymeric reductant. This sugar-based polymeric reductant is distinguished by its environmental sustainability attributes. The synthesized graft polymer demonstrates excellent complexing abilities in a range of environmental conditions, rendering it highly effective across multiple textile processing stages such as pretreatment, washing, dyeing. This investigation highlights not only the technical feasibility but also the ecological benefits of employing graft polymerization to develop specialized, sustainable polymeric materials for targeted industrial applications, thereby promoting environmentally responsible manufacturing practices within the textile sector.
