Abstract :
Poly butylene succinate (PBS) and poly butylene succinate-co-adipate (PBSA) are biodegradable polymers widely studied for their applications in nanofiber fabrication due to their eco-friendly and excellent material properties. PBS nanofibers are characterised by their rigidity, thermal stability, and crystallinity, making them suitable for applications requiring structural integrity. However, their stiffness can limit flexibility and processability in certain applications. In contrast, PBSA nanofibers, which incorporate adipic acid into the polymer chain, exhibit enhanced flexibility, reduced crystallinity, and lower melting temperatures, improving their processability and elasticity. These differences in mechanical and thermal properties arise from the chemical modifications in PBSA, resulting in a material that is more suited for applications requiring elasticity and adaptability, such as in tissue engineering or air filtration. Both nanofiber types show promise in sustainable applications. Here in, we introduce a comparison between the properties of PBS and PBSA nanofibers showing the pros and cons of each of them in terms of morphological structure, crystallinity, and mechanical properties. We found that the PBS has higher crystallinity up to 45 %, while the PBSA had lower crystallinity of 23 %. However, the PBSA showed much higher mechanical strength which is almost double that of the PBS nanofibers.
