Abstract :
As an engineering thermoplastic, bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) is of great industrial importance due to its superior performance properties such as high heat deformation temperature, excellent impact resistance and toughness. In order to improve the impact toughness of PC, which gradually deteriorates during aging, it can be prepared as a blend with acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) and the obtained PC/ASA blends have the potential to be widely used in engineering products due to their superior mechanical properties, easy processing, and low cost. However, the application of PC/ASA blends in various application fields has been limited due to its poor thermal stability and high flammability. Therefore, the incorporation of flame retardant additives into PC/ASA blends has become necessary to induce the thermal stability and flame retardancy of PC/ASA blends for the application under high-temperature condition. In this study, it is aimed to develop PC/ASA blends with superior flame retardant properties especially for use in the automotive industry. In the presence of a commercial phosphorus based flame retardant the influence of various nanofillers such as organophilic montmorillonite (o-MMT), organophilic halloysite nanotube (o-HNT) and expandable graphite (EG) were examined. In this context, neat PC/ASA blends and, flame retardant and nanofiller containing PC/ASA blends were prepared by using melt blending technique. The effect of flame retardants type and composition, on the properties of PC/ASA blends were determined by using flammability analysis, and mechanical and thermal characterizations.
