Hydrogels Used as Wound Dressing Materials

Abstract :
Considered the largest organ of the human body, the skin acts as a barrier against external dangers. Wound healing is a multifaceted process. Wounds are classified as acute and chronic according to the wound healing time. It is generally accepted that acute wounds heal within 4 weeks, while chronic wounds may take months or even years to heal. When the skin is subjected to extensive or deep injuries due to accidents, it is difficult to heal on its own. Current wound dressings such as gauze and bandages cannot meet the various needs of patients due to their poor moisturizing effect. These traditional dr essings struggle to provide a moist wound environment and cause scarring during healing. They also tend to adhere to the tissue and cause secondary injuries when they are replaced. As an ideal candidate for wound dressing, hydrogel materials have been shown to have good application potential in wound dressing. Hydrogels are three-dimensional networks of hydrophilic polymer chains that can absorb and retain large amounts of water. Their structure is like an extracellular matrix, which facilitates wound dressing. In this study, jeffamine based hydrogel films were synthesized. This film used as a template and Ag containing composite film was prepared as well. A hydrogel film structure whose structure provides antibacterial properties was used. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Swelling test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the prepared films. Antibacterial activity of the film were tested and drug release profiles of the films were evaluated.
